Diploma in Sports Therapy - advanced studies

Advanced anatomy & Physiology :

Joints - detail of structure, their components and ligaments & tendons that support them, muscles responsible for their movement, normal ranges and types of movement.

Muscles - origins, insertions, nerve supply & their actions. Prime movers and assistors.

Surface anatomy - palpation of structures, tendons, muscles, ligaments, bone prominences, joint lines and pulse points.

Remedial massage & manipulative techniques :

Sports massage - pre/post event massage, use of techniques to work on the deeper muscles of the body; applied massage for specific injuries; remedial massage - evaluation & treatment of specific problem areas using neuro-muscular techniques, soft tissue release, soft tissue manipulation & articulation of joints.

Strength training & sports conditioning :

Excercises for strengthening various muscle groups; structure of sport specific schedules; use of excercises in rehabiltation of injuries.

Gym Instruction and Fitness Testing :

All the standard testing and fitness training techniques used in gyms or sports clubs.

Sports nutrition :

Sports specific requirements; pre and post event loading and recovery; water and sports drinks; bulking protein powders; performance, speed, strength, stamina

Sports injury recogniton & management :

Evaluation of injury; injuries related to specific sports; orthopaedic tests; evaluation, management and treatment of injuries to lower and upper limbs, spine and trunk, including taping and strapping. This module includes experience in the teaching clinics.

Rehabilitation and Biomechanics

Evaluation of limbs, spine and feet; gait analysis, walking re-education; restoration of mobility, progressive phases of rehabilitation; strength, balance and co-ordination; core stability; hydrotherapy; sports remedial exercise; selection of treatment modalities.

Electrotherapy :

Use of electrical equipment such as TENS, ultrasound and interferential.

Work experience :

120 clinic hours are logged and assessed, with experience including running an “in-house” clinic at the college.
